our purpose
When Panmure Island Lighthouse was built in 1853 its purpose was to protect the safety of Islanders and be a guiding light home for sailors. The light from the fresnel lens could be seen from 20 nautical miles during its tenure from 1853-2010. Nowadays the lantern room uses an automatic light triggered by a solar switch. This lens can only be seen from 8 nautical miles away. The lantern is now managed by the Canadian Coast Guard and the lighthouse and grounds are managed by the Panmure Island Lighthouse Association.
The Panmure Island Lighthouse Association (PILA) dedicates itself to protecting and restoring the lighthouse for current and future generations. Panmure Island lighthouse is an important tourist attraction with seasonal visitors of over 12,000. The lighthouse is frequently used in marketing materials for Prince Edward Island. Through education and advocacy PILA continues to keep Panmure Island Lighthouse a popular and preserved landmark.
The lighthouse’s current setup consists of the first floor gift-shop with products from Island artisans. The second floor was turned into a museum in 2018 and displays items of historical significance along with a digital presentation of their importance. The third and fourth floors are smaller rooms on route to the lantern room on the fifth floor. From there you can see breathtaking views of the surrounding ocean and Panmure Island.
